What A Difference A Couple of Degrees Makes

If you’ve kept up with this blog and have an interest in pet photography, you’ll remember the sweet angle that I speak of.  In my opinion most dogs are presented more attractively at 45° to the camera.  Case in point – Nikki.

You’ve met Nikki twice before.  Good Citizenship and #1 Doggie Dress-up Tip.  These two photos illustrate what I mean by finding an attractive angle for your subject.  You may be surprised to find that your dog will give you choices.  Many times it’s not difficult to pose your subject close to the 45°.

Compare the left and right images of Nikki.  On the right her back is rounded and she just doesn’t look as comfortable as she does on the left.  That’s not true, of course — it’s just perception, but that’s what we’re discussing.  Though her back may be rounded on the left, it’s a flattering angle which hides certain flaws.

Perceived comfort will create a more compelling photograph.  Try it yourself.  Capture some images at a number of different angles.  Compare them.  I’d love to hear what you think about this.  Better yet, post your tests here.

Just in case you haven’t heard, Sisters Pet Pics has relocated.  If you’re in the neighborhood between Covingington and Mandeville LA on Sunday, October 11th, stop by our new studio for our Grand Re-Opening Bark Bash.  Visit Sisters Pet Pics for more details!
