Jimmy, the retired Greyhound, pictured here, and Sisters Pet Pics, would like to wish you all a safe and happy 4th of July. Although Jimmy looks like he would enjoy all the festivities, such is not the case. We need to get into the heads of our companions, as they do not speak our language.
Perhaps if anthropomorphism were more prevalent in our society, we would more easily relate to what our dogs feel. Occasionally I’ve attended events where there was fireworks, and I’ll notice someone has brought their dog! Dogs do not like fireworks. If they don’t cower in fear, it does not mean that they like them. Just because humans like to see bombs bursting in air does not mean our companion animals understand that they are safe.
If you are a household that shoots these off (illegally, by the way), please be aware that parts of them fly into your neighbor’s yards where dogs may reside. Every year I have to clean up our back yard of debris before my dogs go outside on the 5th. Two of our dogs are eating machines, so after they have cowered inside all night, they’d love to go out in the morning and eat all the explosive debris!
Try to get into the head of Jimmy. See him smiling at his mom? He’s just doing this for her. He has no interest in the holiday with all the trappings. He just loves his mom. Let’s love them back just as much, and protect them from the noise and debris…it’s not safe for them.
Don’t forget to bring your Greyhound to Sisters Pet Pics studio to be eligible to be in the Greyhound Pets Of America – Louisiana Chapter’s 2010 calendar. It’s going on now!
