Splitting Hairs

Gracie The Golden Retriever Mix (Click to enlarge)

Gracie Golden Retriever (Click to enlarge)

Go ahead.  Click the image twice and split ‘em.  Look at her left eye and count the hair around it.  Okay, I’m not doing that either, but my point is sometimes when you look at what was intended to be a head shot might be even more interesting closer. What, you say?  You think I look at too many photographs?  Perhaps.  But I like to keep it interesting…for myself and for my clients.  Remember what I said once about how we, as photographers, bring all our talents and foibles into the studio (First I Am A Human Person)?  We bring our moods and emotions as well.  Do we get them from our subjects?  Do our subjects get some from us?

Meet Gracie, the beloved dog friend of our beloved friend.  Gracie is about 12 and looks half her age.  She’s active, svelte and beautiful.  Last month we learned that Gracie had a small growth on her tongue.  It was biopsied and found to be malignant.  I type these words sparingly as we will not give in to this and putting this energy out to the world may compromise our efforts to stay positive.  I’m sharing Gracie’s positive story with you to give hope to all.  Gracie had the growth removed and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.  She is doing quite well.

Last week I heard a story on NPR about the effects of a loved-one’s love upon a recipient.  Testing was done with a husband and wife.  The woman was attached to electrodes in a separate room.  The electrodes measured blood flow to the thumb and skin conductance activity.  Together it measured the unconscious nervous system.  The man was in another room with a closed circuit television.  He was told to watch the screen which would go on and off at random intervals.  When on it would show the woman for 10 seconds.  He was told to send his wife “loving, compassionate intention”.  At experiment’s end a read-out showed that within 2 seconds of the pictures of his wife, the man’s “loving, compassionate intention” was read by the woman.  Her blood flow and skin conductance activity increased at precisely the time when the video was shown to the husband.  She felt his love.  The odds of this happening randomly is 1 in 11,000.  Please read more of this from the story Can Positive Thoughts Help Heal Another Person?

Can we possibly think this phenomenon only works for humans?  Posh!  All life forms can feel it.  Love heals.  Animals know that.  They lick and nuzzle one another and us to share that love.  We just go through the motions of testing because humans seem to require empirical proof.  Do we throw medicine out the window because we’ll just heal with love?  Uh, noooo.  We use our brains as well and we heal with everything we’ve got.

So love a lot and love big.  Surround Gracie and everyone else with all the love light and prayers you can muster, because this will help us heal one another.  Don’t forget to advance your cause with medicine, but there is no difference between the love we feel for our animal brothers and sisters and our human ones.  So here’s wishing the only split hairs in your life should fall harmlessly on your head.
