The Mothering Kind

Phoebe - The Mothering Kind

Phoebe - The Mothering Kind

A couple of days ago, in a post about photographing kittens and puppies, I mentioned Phoebe.  Well, meet Phoebe.  Beautiful, huh.  Phoebe is a long haired Chihuahua who most would not think of as a nurturing kind of gal.  I guess it’s because she’s an only dog child and…well…she’s a Chihuahua, after all.  They’re a pretty self-centered lot.  (I’m allowed to say that because one of the loves of my life is Frida, the courageous and talented Mexican dog.)

I thought it was only fair that I give Phoebe a chance to speak for herself.

I behave as I do because I have the best human parents a gal could want.  Tender, loving and talented too!  They taught me to be self-reliant and yet dependent enough to make them giggle.  Oh yes, folks, I’ve got it figured out.  They shower me with attention and take me places most dog people only dream about.  Do you think I didn’t know what I was doing during this photo shoot?  Ha!  I made you drape that cloth over my mom so I could sit on her lap for this shot.  When I can be near her or my dad, I’m my happiest…and who doesn’t want to be happy!

And now that my mom and dad are fostering four kitty babies, I must do my part.  I just love ‘em too.  They don’t look much like me but I don’t care.  That’s what my mom and dad taught me.  Love is love, folks!

And there you have it.  Right from the h-o-r…dog’s mouth.  The tip of the day is from Phoebe.  When you have tried all your tricks and you can’t seem to get the shot in your plan, try draping a cloth over your assistant (in this case it is Phoebe’s mom) and place the subject as squarely as you can in their lap.  Although there are definitely some issues with this photo (tell me what you think they are) I love the way Phoebe is looking…at her dad.

Exif:  1/250, f13, ISO 200.  As always, comment on this photo or post or upload one of your own.

  • I am humbled by such praise, Melissa. We feel blessed to have met so many wonderful dog and cat people in our studio over the years, and especially graced by your whole family of people and pets.

Hello. This is Melissa – Phoebe’s mommy. Paula, I’ve said it before but it needs to be said again, you are such a talented photographer and a true professional. Phoebe has to be one of your most difficult clients – she is scared, nervous, anxious, constantly flying off the table, cowering under her parents, and during the photo sessions her large beautiful ears are usually flat back and fearful and her huge black eyes filled with worry. HOWEVER, you and Terry take your time and always give Phoebe lots of encouragement and you do whatever it takes to get “the shot”. We have never left without several amazing shots of Phoebe in all her glory…ears upright & eyes shining. The photos are always fanatastic but what amazes me is all of the tricks/tips that Sisters does to get “the shot”. We love you guys and can’t say enough good things you.

    Melissa
