This is our Frida Kahlo. We call her our talented and courageous Mexican dog. Here’s a little Frida story – you should tell us a story about your photo too. By the way, don’t forget to watermark your images before posting.
Our studio is located in Good Dog Naturally, a local pet supply store. Once a month they hold an adoption day where the local rescue groups bring their in-need-of-forever-homes folks. We were in the store shooting two years ago during one of these adoption days. In an exercise pen full of puppies was this skittish one-eyed little girl. She had every reason to be a a nervine. Those silly puppies thought she was one of them! Frida was being called Shadow by the staff at St. Francis Animal Sanctuary because she just followed humans around so closely you had to be careful not to step on her.
Although she is a tough little cookie she’s had many health issues. Just prior to the adoption day she had her left eye removed due to an untreatable infection. She also had most of her teeth removed because of a serious gum infection. Her little tongue hangs out a little because of this. Well, when we saw her it was just too difficult to leave her behind…so we didn’t! We had to take this 8 or 9 year old home to add to our brood of five dogs, six cats and two birds. We never looked back. We felt Shadow just wasn’t her name. We think she told us her name was really Frida…and so it was.
This photo was taken about 6 months later (we adopted her two years ago). In the beginning I tried to shoot her from a more flattering angle where you could only see her on the side of her good eye. Although I love this image of her it has a couple of issues. Would you like to proffer a critique? I’ll give you mine soon thereafter.
